How Does This Place Work?

I am confused. There seems to be an endless procession of sign ups. I joined Ning and found Beer for Chicks. So I signed up for that. But I leave Ning it seems when I sign in to Beer for Chicks. Now I tried to read the full post by Cane on beer judging. But it wanted me to sign in or join yet another something. Where is the community exactly?
